New York is one of our favourite cities! It is different in every season and has an amazing energy. Here are some of our favourite things to do when visiting NYC!
1. Take a trip up the Rockefeller building
In our opinion Top of the Rock up the Rockerfeller building has the best views in New York. Looking over to the Empire State building one way and the other over Central park the other, you get great views of New York’s best skylines.
2. Take a ferry to the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
Looking for something a little more historical? check out The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Lady Liberty is a wonderful sight to behold and the views back over lower Manhattan are classic. Ellis island is an incredible documentation of America’s history and the people who entered it, and not to mention a beautiful building!
3. Visit the World Trade Centre & 9/11 memorial
I feel this is something that you have to see if you visit New York, not only to pay your respects to those people who didn’t survive this tragic event but to give you an idea of the sheer size and scale of the area. Its peaceful and a perfect place to reflect on life and the events that happened.
4. Cycle through Central Park
You can’t go to New York and not go to Central Park! Basically a huge park in the middle of the city and the views that you get from around the park including the backdrop of skyscrapers is just something you can’t get anywhere else. Hire a bike to cycle along the paths and roads throughout the park to get around faster. Our Highlights are- The Mall, Sheep Meadow and The Lake.
5. Stroll around Greenwich Village
The village is a more relaxed part of Manhattan; It has been known as an artists haven and Bohemian capital. The main reason we love this part of the city is due to one of our favourite films, When Harry met Sally, but the overall feel of the village is a great get away from the City that never sleeps.
6. Natural History Museum
See some culture and learn about the world and all it’s wonders at the Natural History Museum. Famous for “Night at the Museum” this magnificent museum has an amazing collections of specimens and is a wonderful building. You can check out the views over central park while in a room with a t-rex skeleton- sounds like a good day to me.
7. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge
You can’t say that many brown 1870 bridges are beautiful but the Brooklyn Bridge is. You can walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to get some beautiful views of Manhattan and the advantage of visiting the Brooklyn Pier- Try the Brooklyn Pier Ice Cream Factory while you’re there!
8. See the views from the Highline
The Highline is a park above the streets of New York which was originally a disused and abondoned railway. It has now become a long linear park that takes you through some of New York’s districts while giving you a new perspective of this wonderful city.
9. See the bright lights of Times Square
Times Square is a must see tourist destination. It is here that you really get a sense of how busy this city is. The lights of the advertisements are really something to behold and your eyes never know where to look next. See Times Square at night and watch the big screens light up the street.
10. Look up and see the stars in Grand Central Terminal
This has to be one of the most impressive train stations in the world. Certainly the best I have ever been to. Grand Central Station is a great piece of New York history; for one the building is amazing even from the exterior. As you walk in the shiny stone reflects the lights and the turquoise and gold ceiling is like nothing I can explain. It is a perfect example of the extravagance of the time was built.
It is one of our favourite cities in the world and we can’t wait to go back!
